Background:
- Gingivitis is an inflammatory disease that affects the gingival epithelium and fibrous connective tissues
- The inflammation, induced by the microbial biofilm (plaque) elicits an immune response in the host, mediated by neutrophils, macrophages, monocytes, lymphocytes and resident gingival cells
- They release cytokines that induce inflammation and disease progression
